GETTYSBURG~A ROOM AT THE INN~ARE YOU ALIVE

Hello, we had a wonderful vacation and I'm really anxious to share it with you! Our new truck was really great. We had plenty of room and did get good milage with it. I'm sure it will do fine pulling the boat at the end of the month when we head to the beach.

Now on to Gettysburg, Pa. what a beautiful place, so rich in history and they sure are proud of their heritage. There is so much there to see and take in that we were no way ready to leave. We had been expected in NJ so we had to pack it up and go. We are planning a trip back in October and will meet some of our friends from NJ there as when they went the first time they did not allow enough time either. It will be a fun trip in the fall and will be nice to spend time with them.

First let me share with you a picture of these beautiful figurines that I purchased there. They look right at home with all hubby's family pictures from that era.

This is supposed to be Stonewall Jackson with his wife and daughter. He was born not too far from our farm here in WV, we visit his homeplace at least once a year when they have their annual Civil War Event.

This one is supposed to be a mother saying goodbye to her son. It touched my heart since my son might be going to Iraq.

This one is a young couple saying goodbye. The next time we go I plan to buy some soldiers from the North & South to complete the set.

A ROOM AT THE INN~~~~ The Farnsworth House

I saw this beautiful picture below in a travel guide and called to get this room for our stay in Gettysburg. I was told it was booked solid. We ended up staying in a Comfort Inn, it was nice but not as pretty as this room was. While we were in the town I noticed the Inn and they had a bookstore so I went into it. It was there that I saw a large print of this room, talking to the cleck I mentioned that I had wanted to stay in that beautiful room. She then told me it was the most spirited room in Gettysburg. Well gosh I'm glad they did not have a room at the Inn. I would have been scared to death. Would have not let hubby leave my side for a minute if we had stayed there! I had another picture here but as I was typing this post it just disappeared, that is really strange!!!!!

The Farnswroth House is Gettysburg's only authentically restored Civil War house. A Bed & Breakfast also open for candlelight and garden dining. It was occupied by Confederate sharpshooters and had over 100 bullet holes still visible today.

If you click on the pic you will be able to read this sign.
Bullet holes in side and front of house.

Below is The Jennie Wade, she was the only citizen of the town killed during the three days of fighting. While attending to household duties, she was killed by a stray bullet on the morning of July 3rd, 1863. The house had been restored and is now a museum.

Her sweetheart Corporal Johnston H. Skelly was wounded in the Battle of Carter's Woods near Winchester, Virginia. He died July 12, 1863 at Winchester without knowing of Jennie's fate.

The holes in the doors through which Jennie Wade's killer bullets entered the small kitchen to snuff out Jeannie's life.

This bed was in the palor because Jennie's sister had just given birth to a baby boy and Jennie and her mother were taking care of her. At about 7 AM a stray bullet came in through the window struck this bedpost and landed on the pillow of Jennie's sister & baby. Jennie then went into the kitchen to finish her chore of making biscuts when the bullet came through the back door then through the interior door which Jennie was hiding behind, struck her in the back and killed her.

She was killed at 8:30 AM and the clock was stopped at that time and has never been started again. That was a custom during those times.

Jennie was behind this door making biscuts when she was struck down.

A cannonball went through the roof of Jennie's house and ripped through the brick wall of the neighboring house. The house was half a double.

A pretty palor in her house.

This was a painting that was in the basement of the Jennie Wade house. Her sister and baby with soilders that were preparing for Jennie's funeral.

The new National Military Park is a $103 million facility that is changing how nearly 2 million visitors a year view Gettysburg. It's nearly the size of 2 1/2 football fields. The story of Gettysburg is told in readings from letters from soilders, civilians, coorespondents and others.

The following pictures are some of the things that intrigued me. Click on the picture to get a larger view.

This scarf was given to a girl by a soilder because she reminded him of his daughter.

Because I love embroidery so much this sounds like something I would have done.

This little sewing kit was given to a little girl by a soilder.

A valentine left by a Confederate in a home said on the back.~~~~~~~

"July 2nd 1863 Mr Yankee/your house has not been torn up at all, compared with the way your soilder/did at Fred-/erickburg. I only killed one goose and took one pair stocking/ signed Rebel."

A Child's Gift~~~~~~~

When I went into this store the man working in there looked to be about 90. He said to me when I walked in."are you alive" Well I thought that was a strange thing to ask, so I said "Yes, do people come in that are not alive?" He said "Yes". I did not spend much time in there! LOL

Next are some houses that I thought were beautiful!

This is the Historic Gettysburg Hotel Established 1797. It's a beautiful place and we might try to stay there when we go back. It's central to everything located on a square in the center of town. I love to walk around town in the evening a look at all the pretty store fronts.

This Licensed Battlefield Guide bus tours offer the visitor a truly unique perspective into the sturggles of the three days' battle. We really enjoyed that, I don't think you could have seen and learned that much on your own.

This is an Enduring Light to guide us in unity and fellowhip. You can't see the flame but it was burning.

Hubby looking at one of the cannons.
Battlefields.

Here is the home of Boyds Bears. It was a real nice place, they were low on bears since they had just had a Civil War Event the week before with over 12,000 re-enactors. So that brought in so many people. We had lunch and did a little shopping.

Bear prints in the parking lot.

I loved this antique stove that was in here, it would look so good with all my jadeite.
A little display inside, the bears did not show up here they are hiding in the flowers.

This is a picture of all the vintage finds that I found in antique stores in Gettysburg and New Jersey. If you look at my last post for Pink Saturday you will see closeups of all this. I found some really nice things at great prices.

When we travel I do needlework or read. I am a back seat driver, hate the tractor-trailers. I think they should have their own roads. LOL. Hubby says "put your head in a book or do some cross stitch" so I will let the driving to him.
The aqua crochet is going to be a pillow, I will make some pink ribbon roses for it. Then I finished a cross stitched rose that my friend had started years ago. It was one of the last things she worked on before she died. I'm trying go get all her things finished then I will do a post on them. The other is a little apple pillow sham. It's from a club that I had joined at Keepsake Cross-stitch, their was one for every month. I'll post pics of them all after they are finished.
I picked up quite a few books to read. I can't wait to get to them. Gettysburg Addresses has some beautiful houses to read about, alot of them are open for tour.

All three of these look interesting, the front page newspaper of the three days of the war, Letters from Home and Human Interest Stories.
Well thank you so much for stopping by and I hope you enjoyed this little tour of Gettysburg! Please leave a comment, I'd love to hear from you!
Blessings, Shirl

Wow Shirl! You could be a tour guide. Thanks for the history lesson. I lived a year in PA as a child and I did get a chance to visit Philadelphia but not Gettysburg.

Thanks for coming over to my blog today! It's wonderful to see old friends in new places!

I came here for the tea and got caught up in your Gettysburg post. I live right next door to Gettysburg but haven't been there for years. Your post and photos have given me the idea to visit next weekend.

We visited Gettysburg two years ago and it looks like we have photos of lots of the same things. Especially the "favorite houses". I truly believe you can't see it all in less than a week! Soooo much history, it gave me goosebumps.

Hi Shirl :)

I really enjoyed this tour! I would have died if that man had asked me if I was alive. Did he say anything else??

Thank you for sharing this :)

Shirl thank you so much for sharing your vacation!
This is on our places to visit but now I want to go even more.

I wouldn't have wanted to stay in that "spirited" room either! I'm in awe by how straight and strong that Inn looks. The brickwork is different than any I've seen.

That Valentine from the rebel soldier was really something!

What a shame about Jennie getting struck by a stray bullet.

Your figurines you bought are lovely amongst your hub's family photos. Love the mantle!

How nice you were able to finish the x-stich rose of your dear friend. Looks like you picked up some lovely things on your trip!
